Robert John Thompson
III died March 6 in Easton, Maryland.
Born August 16, 1956 in Easton, Maryland, John was employed by North Sails
until a boogie board accident crippled him in 2004. He was a graduate of
Salisbury University.
A native of the Eastern Shore and an avid sports fan, John was a world class
sailor. Even before he could walk, John was sailing the waters of the
Chesapeake. He progressed from Penguins to 420s during his years in the Tred Avon Yacht Club Junior Sailing Class. Then John
began sailing Stars, the one design boat that his parents had taught him to
love. He won many races and championships during his sailing career.
As a sail designer for North Sails, John’s art of designing sails was sought
after not only by local racers, but well-known racing campaigns around the
world. Notables included the Whitbred Contender, “Chessie”, the Americas Cup yachts around the world, and
many other championships here and abroad.
John is survived by his loving family; parents, Robert Thompson of
Tallahassee, Florida and Doris Thompson of Easton, Maryland; sister, Nancy
Flynn and husband, Terry of League City, Texas; nephew, Colin Flynn; and
