2024 TAYC
Heritage Regatta and Atlantic Coast Championship

The Heritage regatta is a chance to enjoy sailing at Oxford without the hustle and bustle associated with the Annual Regatta. The Penguins shared the race course with the Comets, but that didn’t pose any problems this year. PRO Bill Lane and crew did an excellent job with the little wind they had to work with. They were continually adjusting the starting line and course to keep up with the fickle west wind. Race 1, a twice around windward leeward, was shortened to one lap, as the fleet struggled to complete a single lap. The weather mark was brought closer, and the leeward mark shifted below the start and finish lines, to allow for a single lap windward leeward for the remainder of the races. True to TAYC fashion, the exclusion zone of the start finish line was not something the Comets picked up on, and the entire fleet received DSQ’s in race two, as they all passed through the line on the downwind leg. The Penguins had this figured out.
Jonathan and Annie Bartlett traded bullets with Cairn and Charlie Krafft with Bob and Nora Tan and Chris and Campbell Conway right in the mix in the closely packed fleet. Sandy McAllister sailed with Heneage Baugh and had a third in race 3, in a close finish where he tacked to cover Jonathan and the Tan’s snuck ahead right at the finish. It was good to see Gray Shannahan, sailing with his 7 year-old son Graham in Graham’s first Penguin regatta, having resurrected their Exact Penguin after a multi-year layover. Mike Baugh sailed with his son Rodric in his Classic Penguin to round out the fleet. The short courses kept the racing close, with multiple boats overlapped for many of the offwind legs.
Fortunately, the timing of the Log Canoe races was such that they didn’t interfere with our course for their first race, and we had decided four was enough and headed in. Watching the Log Canoes barely moving against the outgoing tide was proof enough that conditions weren’t optimal, validating our decision to call it a day after four races.
