2024 Penguin Internationals
The 2024 Penguin Internationals are in the record books with Jonathan and Annie Bartlett capturing yet another victory, their fifth as a team and sixth for Jonathan. They did it in an impressive fashion, winning 6 of the 9 races sailed, choosing to not sail the last race as they had victory sewn up. Bill Lawson sailing with his wife, Colette Preis, held off Scott and Elliott Leppert in a tiebreaker. Charlie and Cairn Krafft finished fourth, just ahead of regatta organizer and Beachwood Yacht Club commodore Will Wiencke sailing with his son. Sandy McAllister, sailing with Henneage Baugh took 6th. . Martin Krafft, sailing with Anneke Ransijn finished seventh and third in the Classic fleet. Lauren Bednarz-Scott sailing with Sue Bednarz, the only all-female team, finished 8th. Mike Baugh sailing with his son, Roddy, took 9th, with Robert Meelheim and his son Robbie finishing tenth. Joe Maurer with Ana DiBrienza finished 11th, and Keith Christopher and Dawn Smith rounding out the top 12. Bill Parkes and Scott Summerill registered but did not sail.
The Beachwood Yacht Club welcomed the competitors on Friday afternoon, with all of the local boats get measured in and the out-of-town boats getting set up. Saturday, with the wind out of the north to northwest, PRO Bill Murphey set up the race course off of Pine Beach, with the windward mark across the river. Big shifts, wind holes, and local windlines that didn’t extend across the course were the order of the day. Jonathan and Annie Bartlett jumped into the lead, which they never relinquished. Will Wiencke showed a knack for picking the correct side of the course on the second beat, which for this race was the left, to finish second. Confusion at the start of race 2 resulted in a general recall flag being displayed instead of the x-flag for an individual recall. Will Wiencke wasn’t fooled and went on to win the race. Race 3 was held in the dieing northerly, which left three boats stranded at the windward mark (I believe they were finished in place as the committee sent us in for lunch). Will Wiencke did an emergency rudder swap on Lauren Bednarz-Scott’s boat, after the tiller on the original one had come loose along with the top of the rudder.
After a brief rest ashore, the fleet headed out, this time with the wind out of the east but trending south, with a bit more strength for a course set closer to the Tom’s River Yacht Club. In the first race (race 4), the wind did go south on the first beat, favoring the boats on the right side of the course, with the second beat being a fetch from the leeward mark. After rotating the course to align with the breeze, the wind shifted back eastward, so the weather mark was a near fetch from the pin end of the line. What was certain about the wind was that no matter how diligent the committee was about setting up a square course, it wouldn’t be by the end of the race. With an early 3:30 PM cut-off for racing, the fleet sailed in for the day.
Sunday, the wind was out of the southwest, although on the light side. The race committee again set up a course off the Tom’s River Yacht Club, but this time for a westerly breeze, that was trending south. Jonathan and Annie Bartlett won the first three races (7 & 8) with the Lawson boat taking second (actually for all the races Sunday). Scott and Elliott Lepper won the last race to end up in a tie overall with the Lawsons.
