The 2021 TAYC Annual Regatta was sailed on Aug. 14&15.  A  light southwest breeze (4 kts) greeted the 9 teams competing on the Tred Avon river. Jonathan and Annie Bartlett showed that they hadn’t forgotten how to make a Penguin go fast after 2+ years out of the boat, winning the first race, a one lap triangle.  Sara Morgan Watters, sailing with Kai Watters took the win in the shortened two lap triangle course as the wind went a bit light.  Race 3 was a windward leeward which Charlie Krafft, sailing with Donna McKenzie managed to take advantage of some shifts on the last leg to take the win.

We were happy to see a number of first (or second) time Penguin sailors come out for the regatta, with Sara Morgan Watters, sailing with a nephew (?), Kai Watters, (her first Penguin Regatta was at Oxford for the Internationals in 2010), her brother Andrew Watters, sailing with Noel Williams in Sandy McAllister’s newly acquired Burtis Penguin, Against the Grain, and Devon and Lauren Feusahrens, sailing Charlie Krafft’s Freedom Penguin, 9675.  RJ Bay tried out the Burtis Penguin he has taken out of mothballs from the Scheidt family with ballast as crew.

A cold front came through Saturday night and we had a shifty northeast breeze on Sunday, with 20 degree plus wind oscillations, with lots of puffs, windlines, and holes.  Staying in phase and being able to tack when the shifts hit was critical.  Sara Morgan added a bit of ballast (around 75 lbs.) to come up to minimum weight, although this didn’t seem to slow her down as she posted a 1 – 3 – 1 to move into a tie for first, winning it by having 3 first places finishes to the Bartletts’ two.  Bill Lawson and Colette Preis had a consistent 4 -5 string of finishes to finish 4th. RJ Bay showed consistent improvement and finished 5th.  Jeff Cox sailing with daughter Ellie and son Ian was close behind in 6th.  Trippe Ewers, sailing the boat he recently acquired from Bill Lane, sailed with his daughters Caroline and Winnie.  The girls had enough of the light air on Saturday, and decided to take a break on Sunday.

Thanks to PRO Bill Lane, with David Cox aboard, who did a great job of setting good courses, reasonably square lines, which was hard to do with the oscillating wind, and getting in 4 races Saturday by 2 PM, and 3 on Sunday, finishing before noon.  We shared the course with the Lasers (aka ILCA Class), but had no issues as the 5 minute starting sequence put the two fleets far enough apart.  The avoid the start finish line rule continues to be a bit of an annoyance, especially with only two small fleets sailing, and a careful read of the SI’s revealed that a two lap triangle course omits the gybe mark on the second lap, which apparently nobody figured out until the PRO pointed it out to one of the competitors (Jeff Cox), who kindly informed the rest of the fleet while we were in sequence for race 2 on Sunday, which coincidentally, was a T2.

The trophy presentation this year was at the club, owing to the continuing covid concerns.  The junior event, which had over 100 boats competing, was held the previous weekend, so we had the beach pretty much to ourselves.
