Summary

Six Penguins competed in the 2021 William H. Myers Heritage Regatta which also served as the Region III championship.  The forecast was not promising, with light winds out of the northeast and a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day.  We started off with the breeze in the 3-4 kt range at 030 degrees on a windward leeward course (L) with the start and finish line below the leeward mark.  We shared the course with the Comets with the committee boat in the rough vicinity towards Bachelor’s Point, and the windward mark near the Oxford Town Park.  Scott Leppert, sailing 9675 which he borrowed from Charlie Krafft, took advantage of a big shift to the left to lead around the two lap course.  The outgoing tide, supplemented with some heavy rainfall overnight generally made the left side of the course unfavorable, but the 30 degree shift overcame that.  In most of the other races, the right side was more favorable, although the occasional lefties made it anybody’s guess which side would pay off.   Before race 2, the committee shifted the weather mark and posted a big O on the course board.  Sandy McAllister noted the change of course from L to O, which is an Olympic course, and the search began for a gybe mark, which was nowhere to be seen.  After a general recall was issued, presumably because of the course confusion, the O was converted to 0 degrees and the L, which was still there, but suffering from illegibility due to a tired white board marker, was redrawn and the race got off.  RJ Bay, sailing with Jimmy White in his first ever Penguin regatta, took the bullet followed closely by Scott Leppert.  Scott posted a 2nd in race 3, leading the regatta at this point, but retired during race 4 to deal with a heat exhaustion issue. The breeze did pick up to the 5-8+ range and although storm clouds loomed in the distance, we had sunny skies.  The breeze was tricky enough to send 3 Log Canoes swimming.

Bill Lawson, sailing with Donna McKenzie finished 3rd overall.  Scotty Allan, sailing with his daughter Brooke, took 5th overall, with Sandy McAllister, sailing with Annie Bartlett in 6th.  Noted at the awards ceremony were the two young crew, Jimmy White and Brooke Allan. Jimmy reportedly tipped the scales at about 50 lbs.
