Due to the Covid-19 virus, the Oxford Annual Regatta
was held over multiple weekends this year.
The Penguins sailed on Sunday, August 9th. We were joined by
the senior Lasers on the race course off of the Oxford town park. The winds were out of the west and in the 2-5
knot range, with more emphasis on the lower end of the scale, especially for
the latter races. Bill Lawson, sailing
with his wife Colette Preis showed they hadn’t
forgotten how to make their boat go fast by winning three of the four races in
the challenging and patience testing conditions. Charlie and Cairn Krafft managed to finish
second although had more trouble in the later races as Scotty and Brook Allan
improved dramatically after their first race and finished strong to beat Bill
Lane, sailing with grandson Ethan Lane on the tie breaker for third. Bill took the award for top Classic
Penguin. Jeff Cox sailed with his son
Ethan to take 5th. Matt Lane,
sailing with his daughter Annabelle sailed to a convincing victory in race 2,
but retired after the third race as the races were quite long and hot, with
race three within a few minutes of the one hour time limit. Sandy McAllister couldn’t convince Annie
Bartlett to crew for him, as Annie’s dad, Jonathan was unable to attend, and
sailed solo. Tait and Finn McCarthy
sailed Sewall Cox’s boat, Fox in Socks and were always in the mix in the
closely packed fleet. John Atwood, in
his newly acquired Airhead had a little trouble getting out to the race course
and had to retire for the day. Hopefully
we will see him at our next event.
