The TAYC Spring Invitational doubled as the Region III championship.  We were unable to sail the Region III champs in 2018 due to inclement weather at the end of the season, marking the first time since the perpetual was first awarded in 1948 that we have missed a year (one year it was sailed for twice though).  This year we were joined once again by the Comets and new this year, the Albacores.  The wind started out flat calm, but came up a bit as we drifted out to the course. It looked like a heading of 020 as PRO Eric Crawford set up the windward leeward course with midline committee boat, and the TAYC special clause of avoiding the start and finish lines except when starting or finishing.  This of course, makes one commit to one side or the other on the downwind (or multilap upwind) legs.  Of course, the wind didn’t stay at 020, and went as far left as 345, making for some big gains for those picking the right side of the course (left in this case).

In race 1, Bill Lawson was left becalmed on the starting line as the fleet charged off on port tack, however he was patient and got to a wind line that filled in from the left, to lead around the one lap course.  In race two, Scott Leppert, sailing a boat that his dad, Skip Moorhouse recently brought back to life, sailed into the lead on the run, only to have the wind quit and the fleet compress.  After a tight end of the first (and  only) run, Charlie Krafft with Donna McKenzie, ended up breaking an overlap with Bill Lawson, sailing with his wife, Colette Preis, and sailed to a win in that race.  In race 3, now 2 laps since the breeze had filled in a bit, Scott Leppert found the magic that Skip had put in the boat and jumped to a big lead by finding one of those 345 degree wind lines on the left side of the course, sailing to a comfortable win.  In race 5, Jeff Cox, sailing with his son Ian, led around the 1 lap course, but were edged out at the finish to take 2nd in that race and 4th overall.  Sandy McAllister, sailing with his son Max, were first in the gross weight category, but were in the mix in all of the races.  Bill Lane sailed with Katrina Greer and had very consistent finishes, although off the pace that they normally sail.  Karl Langkammerer sailed his green Wright boat with Sebastian Sardi – a promising, up and coming sailor in his own right.  Sebastian’s dad is Carl’s cardiologist and to his credit is responsible for saving Carl’s life after a health incident last year.  Dr. Sardi, thanks to Carl, has discovered sailing and because of Carl’s efforts to organize the Tuesday night racing in Oxford, has become a convert to Penguin racing.  GK O’Mara sailed Larry Cole’s Penguin,9609, with Parker Corson as crew.   Hopefully, we will see GK on the race course more frequently in the years ahead.
