The Miles River Yacht Club hosted the Albacore and Friends regatta on the weekend of June 22-23, 2019. The event served as the Albacore Mid-Atlantic Championships. 9 Albacores were joined by 3 Windmills on Saturday, with 3 Penguins racing on Sunday. Conditions were ideal, with winds starting out in the 8 kt. range and eventually dropping to about 5 kts for the six race series. For race 1, we sailed a two-lap windward leeward. For race 2, the committee sent us around one time, as the course was a bit long for Penguins, given the one-hour time limit and moderating conditions. Eventually, a separate weather mark was set for the Penguins, which wasn’t that much shorter than the Albacore course, but was slightly more to windward in the shifty breeze, which oscillated from the north to the northeast. The committee eventually got the timing of the starts sorted out so the Penguins weren’t starting as the Albacores were rounding the leeward mark. The racing was close, with each skipper winning and the outcome of the race not decided until we reached the leeward mark, and reached over to the finish buoy, set off the bow of the committee boat. This was Brooke Allan’s first regatta, sailing with her dad, Scott.
