The TAYC Annual featured 9 Penguins on the starting line for the first race, in a week southwesterly to westerly breeze.  The competitors struggled to get around the two lap windward leeward “L” course, so the committee shortened the course and finished at the windward mark on the second lap.  Bill Lane, sailing with Kathleen Kurtz took the win after some clever upwind work on the final beat.  (He stayed left, finding slightly better pressure away from the shore. ) The course was situated off of Fox Hole Creek, which is to the north side of the Tred Avon River as it meets up with the Choptank.  The wind shut down for a short while and two of the competitors, Cathy Schmidt and her daughter Natalie and Hank Krafft, decided to call it a day on the race course.  The wind did revive, the course length was modified, and the course was eventually rotated to align with the more westerly rotation of the breeze.  Jonathan and Annie Bartlett took bullets in races 2 and 4.  On Sunday, the breeze was out of the northeast, although fading.  In race 5, Charlie Krafft and Donna McKenzie were able to slip past the Bartlett’s on the second upwind leg, splitting tacks off the stern of a beautiful drake tailed workboat that was spectating at the starting line of the log canoe fleet,  to take the lead and held on for a victory on the downwind finish leg.  Chris and Campbell Conway made a strong play for second, with a three way battle with Jeff and Julian Cox and the Bartlett’s mixing it up, but the last bit of breeze filled in from the right and JB held on for a second with the Conways in third.  In race 6, the wind had all but shut down.  The course was shortened to finish at the weather mark.  44 minutes after the start, Jonathan Bartlett drifted across the line, fighting light breeze and an adverse current.  Patrick Brooks, sailing with Laura Cohen on Saturday and  (?) on Sunday, had his best race, finishing third, by finding a bit more pressure in the middle of the river, in spite of the adverse current to finish close behind Bill Lane.  Martin Krafft, sailing with Sarah Cohen on Saturday had a fairly consistent string of 6th place finishes. His mother, Cairn, sailed with him on Sunday.  Although we had torrential rain Saturday night, and drove into showers on the way home Sunday, the trophy presentation at Harleigh was magnificent, as ever.

(update – Race 6 was abandoned (after the fact) due to a thirty minute time limit to reach the windward mark.)
