President’s Cup and Potomac Penguin Penso Frostbite

Sept. 15, 2018

The early predictions for Hurricane Florence cast a damper on plans for the President’s Cup regatta, but the storm stayed south, the winds stayed moderate, the skies were sunny, and there was plenty of water and no hydrilla to contend with, making for a pleasant day of sailing for the 5 Penguins that competed.  Races were held in the cove.  Due to the unusually high tides that had been experienced, too high, in fact earlier in the week, which had put the crane bases under water and threatened to cancel the event, there was no issue with water.  Reports from the river course were that the current was quite strong, although we didn’t experience that in the cove.

For the racing, Bill Lawson and Colette Preis got off to a quick start, winning the first four of the seven races that were sailed.  Charlie and Cairn Krafft finally managed to catch them in races 5 and 6, but the regatta had already been won by the Lawsons.  Hank Krafft, sailing solo, took second in the final race and third overall.  Amy Krafft, sailing with Wan-Ting Liao had a good day on the water.  Thistle sailor John Gilmour, sailing with his daughter Elizabeth, who recently moved to the DC area, sailed the first two races, but decided Penguin racing was a bit more complicated then they envisioned, and spent the rest of the afternoon sailing around the cove.  Fortunately the exceptionally high tide made a large portion of the cove, which is normally inaccessible, sailable.

After racing, all of the sailors were treated to gourmet pizza from the Lost Dog Café.
