The 2018 Heritage Regatta featured 6 Penguins and 6 Comets racing on a course near the mouth of the Tred Avon, close to the Oxford town park. A weak southeast breeze, with 40+ degree oscillations made setting and keeping a proper windward mark a challenge. In race 1, Read Beigel, sailing solo, found a little pressure on the right side of the course and led around the 2 lap windward leeward course. Bill Lawson and Colette Preis, dug back to the right after starting at the left end of the line, found the wind line, and finished second. In race 2, Charlie Krafft, sailing with Donna McKenzie managed a committee boat end start, which the other boats couldn’t get to, as the wind lightened and the flooding current started to take effect, and led around the course to take the win, holding off the Lawson’s on the final downwind leg. Bill Lane and Kathleen Kurtz took a third in that race. Race 1 took about twenty minutes, race two was just over 30 minutes. (Race 3 took over 45 minutes for the first boat to finish.) The Comets came out during the Penguins second race and were given a start. We had to wait for the Comets to finish so the committee could realign the course for race 3. Read Beigel got off the line, this time a bit away from the favored committee boat end, but in a little better pressure and led around the course. Bill Lane footed off a bit and was able to stay in the narrow lane of pressure that was on the left side. The boats on the right ran out of breeze, and were affected by the adverse current in the more south westerly breeze. Krafft managed to work back on the second beat to pass Lane and get within striking distance of Beigel, but Beigel found a little better pressure on the right on the final run and finished just ahead to take the race and the regatta, which also served as the Atlantic Coast championship. After a bit of finagling to get the TLE scored properly, Lawson finished third, breaking a tie with Bill Lane. Philip Logan, sailing with Olivia Taylor in 9576, which Drew Kellogg recently donated to the Penguin Class finished fifth, and Dick Geis sailing with his wife Penny, persevered in the trying conditions to take sixth. After hearing the traffic report on Sunday afternoon with the 8 mile backup to bridge, we were glad we opted to make this a one day event. The TAYC organizers commented that this was the largest attendance for the Heritage regatta in a number of years, even though the Penguin participation was down from last year.
