2018 Gibson Island Penguin Frostbite.

The GIYS frostbite was sailed on Sunday, November 11th.  Strong winds forecast for Saturday caused us to shift the event to Sunday early in the week, and the forecasters were right with winds gusting over 33 kts. early on Saturday.  Sunday was much nicer, although we had to wait a bit for the wind to fill in and stabilize.  Eventually it did and five one lap windward-leeward races were held.

Bill Lawson and Colette Preis won every race and took home the Lawson Rum Bucket (again).  Eileen Fahrmeier and Matt Gladd took advantage of a tacking duel between the other two boats to take a huge lead when the left side paid off in race 3, only to see their lead disappear on the run with, you guessed it, Bill and Colette winning the race.

After the races, we were treated to Bill’s homemade turkey chili, Cairn Krafft’s cornbread, and Donna’s brownies and rice krispie treats.  Tom Price brought hot cider, which everyone enjoyed on this chilly but sunny day.  The races were efficiently run by Greg Cukor and ably assisted by the newly appointed GIYS race chairman, Christine __.  This year, the Comets decided to join us and 8 of them showed up.  Hopefully we will have more Penguins next year, as the sailing venue is unique and well protected.  Ideal for an end-of-season frostbite.

Due to the low turnout, the Region III Championship was not sailed for and will be rescheduled for the spring of 2019.  This event had been scheduled for Nov. 3rd, but was blown out at TAYC.
