Lawson Rum Bucket Penguin Frostbite Regatta

Nov. 11, 2017

Seven Penguins participated in this year’s Lawson Rum Bucket regatta hosted by the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron.  PRO Tom Price ran 6 mostly two-lap windward leeward courses and was assisted by Joe Fernon who brought his lapstrake boat, Ratty, to help with the mark setting, which occurred after almost every race.  A cold front has passed through overnight leaving us with mid-30’s temperatures and a dying northeasterly breeze. The fickle breeze produced some tricky sailing conditions with incredible leads vanquished by incredible shifts and holes.

The after race gathering in the club building included home-made turkey chili by Bill Lawson and red beans and rice with sausage, New Orleans style, by Scott Williamson, brownies by Amy Krafft and rice krispy treats by Donna McKenzie, and cornbread by Cairn Krafft.  Topped off with hot cider to warm the sailors – no hot buttered rum this year   all of the sailors were well sated.

Bill Lawson and Colette Preis took home the Rum Bucket this year.  John Majane, out for the first time this year and using a new sail, took a bullet in race 2, and Sandy McAllister sailing with Will Donald took a bullet in the final race.  The trophies were hand-made Penguin plates created by potter Kathy Chow.
