The Corsica River Yacht Club celebrated their 75th Annual Regatta on July 23rd (and 24th for some classes). The Penguins competed for the Temple Blackwood trophy, which has been competed for pretty much continuously since 1953.  Stoney Duffey, longtime CRYC Penguin sailor, who was helping with the outside course RC this year, recalled some of the early winners of this event, and actually contemplated bringing his Penguin out of the barn this year, now that he no longer is racing Comets. Possibly next year.

The Penguins sailed close to the club on the Corsica River, while the other fleets, notably Comets and Windmills headed out to the Chester River. Although the temperature was in the low to mid 90’s, no doubt impacting attendance, there was a pleasant northwesterly breeze, that oscillated a bit, first to the north and then to the west, and after race 5, to the southwest.  PRO Joe Della Barba set a one lap windward leeward course which, on average,  took just over 30 minutes to complete.  A bit of extra line on the weather mark ground tackle found its way onto more than one centerboard, but other than that the race management was superb.  The Penguins especially appreciated having our own course with promptly run races, so that we were off the water and out of the heat before the boats that went out in the river, and managed only three races, returned.

A number of young crew were on hand, with David Cox sailing with Liam __, Jeff Cox in the newly refurbished Pyewackette sailing with his son Ian, and Chris Conway trading helming duties with his daughter Campbell.  Bill Lawson recruited LeAnn Myhre out of the SSA Laser Fleet for her first Penguin regatta.
