Southerly winds 5 – 8 greeted the three Penguins that showed up for this year’s President’s Cup, sailed on the River, opposite the power plant due to low tide occurring at 1:30PM, in the middle of the scheduled racing time. After a delay in the start to allow John Majane to get to the starting line, the fleet was off, just ahead of the Lasers who were starting the second lap of their course. This worked fine for the windward leg and the reach (the Lasers proceeded directly to the leeward mark), but a convergence occurred at the leeward mark. Charlie Krafft managed to round ahead of the lead Lasers, Hank Krafft was forced wide by a pack of 5 or so Lasers who had inside overlap. John Majane rounded and was promptly doused by a JY-15, sailing with the Laser fleet. It isn’t quite clear how things played out, but the net result of Majane’s mast getting snagged in the JY-15’s mast was that both boats capsized, with the Penguin fairing worse than the JY-15. The RC was the only crash boat, so after finishing the Lasers, made it’s way down course to effect a rescue. After some effort, the Penguin was righted and pulled up on the Zodiac inflatable to drain most of the water out, and the towed in. Hank Krafft, not interested in a match race decided to call it a day so the one race series results stood.
