Gibson Island Yacht Squadron – Lawson Rum Bucket Regatta
Nov. 15, 2014
A slight fall chill in the air did not deter the five Penguin sailors who made it to this year’s Rum Bucket regatta, hosted most graciously by the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron. PRO Murray Leigh assisted by Jim Farr on the committee boat and Joe Fernon in his own boat, ran a total of six races. The sky was clear and the strong front that had come through on Friday still had a little zip in it, but the wind was quite manageable, even for the single-handers. Unfortunately with the wind out of the northwest and the two significant expanses of water being either north or west, led for some confused wind conditions. With a minute to go, the committee boat end would be strongly favored, only to have 45 degree wind shift occur 10 seconds before the start, making it impossible to cross the line on starboard, or vice versa at the pin end. Bill Lawson chose generally to start away from the “pack”, and was usually well on his way to take advantage of the first shift, well before the rest of the fleet, resulting in four bullets. Scott Williamson started with his young son, Joey, but he got a bit restless after two races, so the allure of Grandpa Joe’s motor boat (also our mark boat) was too much and he jumped ship.
