Summary

The good news:  we had a beautiful day of sailing, and attendance was up 250% over last year.  The bad news, more of you weren’t out on the water to join us.

Five teams were greeted with seasonally cool temperature and an easterly breeze which initially looked like it might build to 10-15.  Although we got a few splashes in the boat on the way to the race course, up the Tred Avon, clear of the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, the wind was adequate although seldom if ever requiring two on the rail, and the sun broke through the clouds, warming things up nicely.  The race committee, ably chaired by Bob Greenlee, with former Penguin sailor Eric Crawford manning the crash boat along with TAYC veteran Steve Requardt, ran 6 windward-leeward races.  Bill Lane with Molly Ford (in her first Penguin race) figured out quickly that the right side was favored with the tide still flooding and led around the course, only to get caught out of phase in one of the many shifts on the final approach to the finish to take 2nd.  Sandy McAllister sailing with a young crew (apologies, as I didn’t record his name) showed great consistency, taking 2nd in 4 of the 6 races for a 2nd place overall finish.  Hank Krafft, after falling from a comfortable 2nd to last in race 4 due to an equipment failure, had a great start and led around the course for a victory in race 5, which turned out to be needed to break a tie with Will and Dylan Wagner.  The racing was close, with many position changes throughout the short races.
