Oxford Summer Regatta

Saturday, July 20th, 2013

The traditional summer Junior regatta was at the end of a blistering heat wave which had seen heat index numbers well above 100 F for most of the week.  Fortunately, although it was still hot, the breeze was up and the spray felt refreshing.  As we arrived at TAYC we were greeted with a  stiff 12-14 kt breeze out of the southwest and a beach littered with Optis, 420’s, and Lasers, holdovers from the junior racing held on Friday.  It was decided that launching from the dock was more civil and a better way for the “old” Penguin sailors to make it out to the race course.  The committee, headed up by Doug Jurius, set a once around windward leeward for race one, followed by twice around  for the next two races.  After a short on the water lunch break, the course was changed to a twice around triangle, which it had been effectively given the excluded start and finish line, only forcing us to go towards the starting line side on the run, which was a greater deviation than the finish line side in the windward leeward courses.

Brittney Beigel sailing with her dad, Read, enjoyed the stiff breeze in the early races and had a couple of strong second place finishes, and sailed to second place overall in her first Penguin regatta as skipper.  Bill Lane sailing with Kathy Kurtz found the going a little slow in the strong breeze, but excelled when it lightened up a bit in race 3.  Sandy McAllister with wife Debbie as crew broke a tiller extension (check those flexible extension joints) before the first race and sailed in to make repairs, but came back and sailed the last three races, taking a second in race 4.  Hank Krafft sailing solo, sailed the first two races, and then retired for the day.  Charlie Krafft with Donna McKenzie kept the Wooden Bucket dry for the windy races (lots of bailing) and then stayed dry when it lightened up.

The juniors were treated to the Scottish Highland Creamery Ice Cream after the races – a modern rendition of an old Tred Avon junior sailing tradition.
