As host to this year’s Penguin Internationals, the Miles River Annual Regatta was a perfect setting for some pre-race tune-up.  The wind was a comfortable 5-8 out of the north to north west.  Unfortunately, we had only two Penguins, and the other two classes slated to race, Lasers and 420’s failed to show up, so we had roughly 4 Race Committee personal for each Penguin crew.

Still, PRO Dick Kelly set up a triangle windward leeward course and was able to use the event to gauge course lengths and train the RC crew for mark setting and course shifting, as the breeze oscillated enough to warrant moving the marks.  Charlie Krafft sailed the first race, and then gave the helm to his crew, Donna McKenzie, as this was a perfect opportunity for some ICPFR practice.  Hank Krafft would have won handily in race 2, but overstood the windward mark on the second beat.  Donna also sailed race 4 and this time things were much closer, as she held on for the win in a  downwind photo finish.  After 4 races, we decided to call it a regatta, which turned out to be a good choice as the wind dropped significantly shortly thereafter.

A surprise visitor appeared as we were having a post-race debrief and planning session for the Internationals.  Paul and Judy Hull made the trip up from Salisbury.  Paul looked great.  He is not ready to get back in the Penguin yet, although he was warned if he shows up at the Internationals, which we fully expect him to do, he will be re-elected Class President (just kidding, we wouldn’t do that).  Great to see him up and about and as always our best wishes for his continued recovery.
