Gibson Island Yacht Squadron
Lawson Rum Bucket
November 16, 2013
Gray overcast skies and a light northerly (forecast called for an easterly) greeted the six Penguin teams that descended on Gibson Island once again for the Lawson Rum Bucket regatta. Murray Leigh served as PRO and with the assistance of Bob Urban with help from Joe Fernon. They ran 6 races, ranging from 12 to 25 minutes each. The heavy cloud cover suppressed the sunshine and the temperature never reached the advertised 60 degrees, instead lingering in the low 50’s with the dampness making for a chilly day which took its toll on the young crew. Rick Truett sailed the Class owned Penguin with son Jack (Rick’s first time back in the Penguin in many years.) Will Wagner with son Dylan had a good time on the water, but retired to warmer confines ashore after three races. Scott and Charlie Williamson started out but after a couple of races, Charlie opted for time with grandpa Joe on his lapstrake Rattie and Scott single-handed it, as did Martin Krafft and Amy Krafft. Charlie Krafft with Donna McKenzie rounded out the fleet and managed to take home the Rum Bucket yet again. This is a beautiful venue for late season sailing and the hospitality of the GIYS in hosting us is greatly appreciated. Next year, maybe we will fill the Rum Bucket as was done in years past.
