TAYC Frostbite and Region III Champs
November 5th, 2011
An ominous forecast of NW winds 15-20 kts with gusts to 30 kept attendance down and race day conditions kept a number of competitors on the beach, but the three who ventured out were treated to a fine day of sailing on the Tred Avon River. The strongest winds were encountered on the way out to the race course, but even those were punctuated by large lulls, which became more commonplace as the day progressed. The key to success was keeping the crew dry and warm.
Thanks to Bubbles Shattuck, we experimented with an X course that he recommended, which had us rounding the first weather mark to port, a leeward mark to starboard, a second weather mark to starboard, and finishing downwind across the starting line, the object being not to need to gybe in the expected high winds. The wind strength didn’t warrant the course, but it was interesting to sail, if not a bit confusing trying to remember which way to round the next mark.
We raced the first two races with the X course, and then reverted to the more traditional windward leeward course with the start – finish in the middle. The wind was mostly out of the northwest, but with large oscillations and lulls, which made for numerous lead changes, as boats a few feet apart were often sailing in remarkably different winds.
