Potomac Penguin Frostbite
April 24, 2010
Wind SE – 5
PRSA PRO Jeff Storck and his RC team including Dan Miller and ? ran the Potomac Penguin Fleet #1 Penso Frostbite Regatta on Saturday April 24th. The one week delay due to high wind forecast on the 17th, left us sailing in the basin at dead low tide. However the predicted rain held off and five races were sailed in a light south east to east south east breeze.
The Georgetown Sailing Team was having a parents’ day event, so the available sailing area in the basin was restricted. The low water made for some interesting strategies, as the south east breeze favored the left (shallow) side of the course. The scores don’t reflect the closeness of the competition with Scott and Aubrey nipping at Charlie Krafft’s heels in most of the races, save the one that John Majane found a favorable wind shift on the first beat and lead around the two lap course. Paul Hull had an off day – the light air and issues with water depth providing a bit of a challenge. By the latter races, the inrushing current had taken care of the water depth problem, but not before making some very interesting weather mark roundings, as numerous sailors got caught short of the mark and had to do crash tacks, or circles after being swept into the mark. Amy Krafft and Brooke Edgecomb started off strong but faded a bit in the latter races, possibly because a leaky centerboard pin started adding considerable water weight to the boat.
The sailors were treated to some Cincinnati chili at Amy’s house after the event and lovely stained glass Penguin sailboats from The Caring Collection were awarded.
