Hello everyone,
Sunday's forecast was for
sunny skies, southeast winds, at 5-10.
Hmm, I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad! We ended up sailing diagonally across the
pond yet again, with the weather mark up in the southeast corner. Setting a square line was almost impossible
because of the shifts and puffs, but as the day went on the pin end was the
place to be. I was very pleased at our
turnout with 9 boats on the line--really good for this time of year. Zoe and Robin
Savage were sailing with us, and Rich Chapman came out again and sailed Cottie's boat.
In the first race Fritz took
the lead early on the first beat, with myself, Rich, and Mike all close
behind. Fritz held us off on the second
beat, but on the run to the finish the top half of the fleet closed together
and finished overlapped. Pat Hilliard
led the charge, coming in from the east.
At the last second he took
the win with Fritz in second and Rich third.
All
5 boats finished within 2
seconds or so.
In the second race Fritz led
wire to wire. I was over early going for
that perfect pin end start so I had to play catch up. Mike Boyle was going very well this day and
he took second with myself in third. Dan Hilliard was right up in the action and
took fourth.
The third race was all Mike
Boyle who worked the east shore and rode a big puff into the lead. It often paid to go that way even if you had
to sail in a header back to the weather mark.
The pressure more than made up for the angle. I made a note of Mike's success and in the
fourth race I headed east on the second beat and took the lead with Fritz and
Mike right behind me.
Fritz and I went right, Mike
went left, and at the end Mike passed us both and Fritz just got across ahead
of me. That was a bummer of a way to end
a race, but that's the kind of day it was.
Race 5 was all Fritz, and at
the end the wind was really dying and the sun was getting lower and lower. We talked about doing a one lap race but by
now the weather mark was in a big hole so we ended up heading in. With 5 races there is no throwout. Mike Boyle ended up winning the day with 13
points. Fritz had to take a weight
penalty and ended up in fourth. Rich
Chapman was third, and myself ended up second. Special mention should be made of Mike, Dan,
and Pat who all sailed really well in challenging conditions.
Two items for consideration:
1. Fritz has asked us to
consider having 3 weight limits: one for the modern boats, one for the classic
boats with metal masts, and one for classic boats with wood spars and older
sails. He would like to have the classic
boat/old sail group carry less crew weight than the current 290 for older
boats.
This is a complicated issue
with pros and cons, so I encourage everyone to think it over and let me know
your opinions.
2. Thanksgiving is coming
and we still don't have someone to pick up the committee boat. Dick Tennerstedt
will run the races if he can get a volunteer to do this. Please let me know ASAP!
